UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesia is collaborating with the European Space Agency (ESA) to study LEO signals of opportunity for resilient UAS navigation in GNSS-denied or interfered environments. The technique uses low-Earth-orbit communication constellation signals for positioning and timing when conventional satellite navigation is unavailable, improving UAV reliability in electronic warfare, urban canyons, and remote areas.
This means a shift from single-source GNSS to multi-source, interference-resistant navigation for defense, security, and industrial customers. Related standards, onboard sensors, and algorithms will become key differentiators for next-generation UAV platforms. Buyers should assess navigation resilience as a core procurement requirement for operations in contested or degraded signal environments.
Resilient navigation architectures combining LEO signals of opportunity with onboard sensor fusion can reduce dependence on GNSS. As standards emerge, suppliers of navigation payloads, algorithms, and complementary hardware will play a growing role in UAS platform selection.
